– The Rivers election re-run holds on Saturday, March 19

– Yet again, the battle line is drawn between Amaechi and Wike

– While praying for a peaceful election, who will win again between the two strong men?

Amechi and Wike

Who is the true Lion of Niger Delta?

The battle line is drawn. The die is cast. Once again, the two political gladiators in Rivers state will be locked in a battle of supremacy in the election re-run slated for Saturday March 19, 2016.

The contest promises to be a battle of the titans. I make a comparison between the warring politicians struggling for dominance of Rivers south-south politicians with the Greek mythology battle of the titans because that is this only comparable modern day feud that has impacted on the politics of the state.

The battle between Amaechi which dates back to pre-2015 election is not going to end soon. Amaechi and Wike who were said to be in the same political camp have definitely become sworn enemies.

The feud between the two political juggernauts can be compared to the classical Greek conflict where the protagonist and the villain are locked in a battle to cause the downfall of the other.

In the case of Rivers, it is difficult to judge who the villain or the protagonist is because they are both laying claim to the political soul of the state.

The battle for the leadership of the state political machinery had been fought on all fronts since the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan.

The fight continues with the governorship election of 2015 when Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party was pitched in battle against Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress.

So far the battle has been won on all fronts by Nyesom Wike who has also be christened the fearsome name of Lion of Niger Delta.

But that to me is surprising because at recent campaign by the APC in which Rotimi Amaechi had addressed party faithfuls, someone in the crowd had hailed Amaechi as the Lion of Niger Delta.

So who is the real Lion of Niger Delta? Amaechi or Wike? Political observers in the state have given it to Wike. They said he deserves the crown as the sitting governor until Amaechi pulls a winning trick out of the bag to dethrone him.

Even though Wike’s victory is still mired in controversy, he and his party, the PDP has managed to successfully play a fast one on the APC in the state.

First he won the controversial governorship election of 2015. When the APC took him to court, the Supreme Court affirmed his election much to the bewilderment of Nigerians. The election was bloody. People died from the violence unleashed by political thugs.

Both parties continue to accuse each other of being responsible for the attacks. The fight between Amaechi and Wike has made Rivers state one of the most violent states in the country today. What has become more worrisome is the spate of attacks going into the re-run election.

Only recently, an APC chieftain was killed in the state. The victim of the attack, Mr. Franklin Obi was the Ward 4 chairman of the party in the area. The gunmen beheaded Franklin Obi, killed his wife, Mrs. Iheoma Obi, and 18-year-old son, Bestman Obi, in their residence.

It was a gruesome killings that mirror the descent of Rivers into a state of anarchy (no pun intended). As the state conducts the re-run election, there are growing fears that the state may yet spiral into violence given the vioent rhetoric deployed by both parties during the re-run campaigns.

Law enforcement agents have been deployed to the state. Already, two soldiers were said to have been killed by fleeing party thugs. No one has yet to claim responsibility.

No one will ever will as the parties keep throwing accusations at one another. Nigerians are hoping the process is conducted peacefully without loss of lives as we have seen in the past.

Let us all pray for peace in Rivers.
