Cultists Risk 14 Years Jail Term In Kwara, Says Attorney-General

COURT

Alhaji Kamaldeen Ajibade, Kwara Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said on Thursday in Ilorin that anybody found engaging in cult activities in the state may bag 14 years maximum jail term if found guilty.

Ajibade who briefed newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council meeting, said amendment request on the existing law prescribing stiffer punishment for cultism has been forwarded to the House of Assembly.

According to the commissioner, the bill when passed into law, would make cultism punishable with minimum of 10 years and maximum of 14 years imprisonment.

Ajibade pointed out that at a time, the government was thinking of including a clause in the bill that allows government to confiscate any house where known cult members live or hold meetings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kwara Government under former Gov. Bukola Saraki had made law that prescribed 10 years jail term for anybody caught engaging in cultism.

NAN also reports that the law prescribed a fine of N50,000 or both, while the father of a cultist would be liable to either 10 years jail term, fine of N50,000 or both as well.
Ajibade expressed the hope that the bill would receive speedy attention of the House of Assembly. (NAN)
