Rape: Suspect claims he was drunk when he defiled his step-sister

Ime Martins, the rapist

A man who has been raping his step-sister repeatedly has been arrested by the police in Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Command has nabbed a 36-year-old man, Imeh Martins Akpan, for allegedly raping his 15-year-old step-sister regularly since she was five-years-old.

But the suspect who was paraded alongside other criminals at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, by the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said he only raped the girl once and that he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the act.

"I was drunk that night and did not know what I was doing when I raped my step- sister. I raped her only once.

You see, I went to a party and when I returned from the party that fateful day, I did not know when I removed my clothes and raped her; there was nobody at home that night.

Sincerely speaking I was under the influence of alcohol; how can I sleep with a little girl like that? I am married. I brought her up.”

But the victim affirmed that her older brother had raped her on more than one occasion.

“He is lying that he only raped me once. He slept with me twice, first when I was 14 years old last year and the second time was last Sunday, when my aunty and her son traveled.

The first time, I reported to my aunty, when my aunty confronted him, he denied it. He said I was careless and probably I had left the door open and an unknown person had come to rape me.

He sounded so convincing and my aunty believed him. The second time which was on Sunday, when he came into the room, he covered my mouth and raped me. I struggled with him, but he overpowered me.

That night, I ran out of the house. The young man I ran to was our neighbour and I reported what had happened. He also almost raped me. So, I ran and I saw the police patrol van from Lion Building, who rescued me.”
