Nigeria In Dire Need Of University Curricula Review – Senator Datti

The Pro- Chancellor, Baze University Abuja, Senator Baba Ahmed Datti ,has charged the new team at the National Universities’ Commission (NUC) to urgently review the nation’s universities curricula.
Senator Datti who spoke   to LEADERSHIP Tuesday in Abuja said unlike what Baze University offers, some of the courses studied in most other universities in Nigeria are out of tune with present day realities.
He said “There is dire need to review all Nigerian curricula. I believe the new leadership of the NUC is the type to bring about the desired changes and they have the attitude and capacity to bring about the desired changes.”

According to him, the vision of Baze University is to become a world class academic institution synergising world class human capital with technology to create the impact and knowledge that is required to develop the Nigerian society.
“The academic infrastructure in Baze University is not comparable to anyone you see in Nigeria,” the Chancellor said.
“In every class room for example, you have what is standard in every international university in the world. You have smart boards, biometric attendance system, CCTV in operation, audio-visual, WiFi in every square inch, intercoms, and we have met and exceed all standard international requirements of space, circulation, library resources, and laboratory support,” he added.
The pro chancellor  also noted that what made Baze University different from other universities is what he called the anonymous examination system.

“We are the only university in Nigeria that practices that. The students are protected against harassment and the lecturers are also protected against corrupt practices. We have deployed technology using biodata and scanning devices, students do no write their names or student numbers on their exam scripts,” he said.
Senator Datti also decried the insatiable taste of Nigerians for foreign education adding that there are better alternatives at home.
“Parents don’t believe in the educational system here, everybody wants to go to India, in fact, it’s like anywhere is better than Nigeria. That is why I keep telling you that government has its lapses and society has its problems. You can’t stop people until the market stops them. If at N160 to $1 they were sending and at N440 they are still sending, what will happen? The thing is that they have better options at home and they are not taking it,” he added.
