Jacob Zuma Survives Another Impeachment Move
South Africa’s ruling ANC has rejected a bid to remove president Jacob Zuma in light of scandals trailing his rule.
A no confidence motion against Zuma, put forward by a government minister, was defeated at a meeting within his own party’s top leadership body.
Zuma has been charged with several corruption allegations, and even more recent, a report pointing out his connections with the Gupta family, known for their wealth. It is alleged that Zuma allowed the Gupta family wield undue influence in his government.
Both the president and the Gupta’s have denied the allegations.
In the run-up to the debate, there were speculations that the ANC would take a no-confidence vote, and some media even carried rough vote estimate counts that were in favour of Zuma.
According to local media reports, Zuma has survived many opposition-sponsored no confidence votes in parliament, and this was the first time he faced a rebellion from senior ANC members who serve in his cabinet.
