Ondo Guber: We Didn’t Connived With APC To Rig Poll – INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied any romance between the commission and the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the just concluded governorship election in the state
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Segun Agbaje disclosed this on Wednesday in Akure during the presentation of Certificate of Return to the Governor-elect,Mr.Rotimi Akeredolu SAN.
Agbaje described the allegation not only untrue, but highly embarrassing.
According to the REC, the only thing Barrister Eyitayo Jegede requested for which the Commission could not grant was the issue of postponing the election.
While maintaining that there was no justification to postpone the election,Agbaje said doing so could be terribly abused by other parties in future if granted.
His words : It is most unlikely that the West African Examination Council (WAEC) would postpone any of its scheduled examinations simply because one of its candidates in a secondary school was sick or wounded.
“It is therefore the civic right of any aggrieved Political Party to go to court on the outcome of the Governorship election of Saturday, 26th November, 2016.I however make bold to say that the Commission did not connive with any of the twenty eight political parties that took part in the election.
“But if at the end of the day, it is confirmed that INEC connived to perpetrate illegalities, I offer to be personally held responsible and be dealt with accordingly.”
On the issue of alleged pre-loadeed Smart Card Reader, Agbaje said it was not true that the SCRs were pre-loaded during the just concluded governorship election in the state.
According to him, “what happened was that during the purging of the four thousand, two hundred and eight SCRs used for the election, only six SCRs were mistakenly not properly purged.
“obviously, they could not be accessed until the Commission’s Technical crew got there and cleared the old figures before the machine could be used. There was also no single PU in the State where election did not take place because of SCR malfunction.”
Agbaje, however used the occasion to reassured all the stakeholders in the Nation’s Electoral Process that the present INEC under the leadership of Prof.Mahmood Yakubu will never do anything that will alter the gains the Commission has so far achieved domestically and internationally in term of credibility.
