3 Nigerian labs bag ISO certificates

Three outstanding Nigerian laboratories have been awarded the International Standard Organisation (ISO) accreditation certificates by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

Mr Tosan Erhabor, Acting Registrar of the council, presented the certificates, known as ISO 15189: 2012, to the laboratories located in Lagos on Thursday in Abuja.

The recipients are Clina Lancet Laboratories, 445 Nigerian Air Force Hospital Laboratory and El-lab Laboratories.

He noted that the gesture was based on the council’s determination to take medical laboratory services to new heights.

Erhabor, however, emphasised that transforming a critical sector like the medical laboratory services required more than “lip service” or“ piecemeal interventions”.

He described the accreditation as a milestone, saying it will further help the country to change the prevailing perception of the diagnostic result emanating from existing medical laboratories.

“By granting them the mark of quality the council is putting its reputation on the line and affirming that their processes and procedures are in line with global best practices.

“Therefore, as the facilities bask in the euphoria of the feat that they have achieved, I urge them to always remember that getting to the top is one thing, remaining there takes a lot of hard work and determination, discipline and diligence.

“Therefore, your professional conduct must be patient-centred, while the results from the facilities must remain unequivocal, accurate and reliable,’’ Erhabor advised.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, described medical laboratory services as “key” in healthcare delivery.

Represented by Dr Wapada Balami, Director Hospital Services, Adewole explained that without diagnosis healthcare delivery would be meaningless to patients.

He, however, noted that laboratories cut across all spheres of life, saying that dearth of medical laboratory scientists would render the nation’s healthcare.

“Healthcare delivery is incomplete without the medical laboratory services and medical laboratory scientists.’’

The minister, who commended the three laboratories being the first in the country to have acquired such certificate, described the feat as “a land mark achievement in the country”.

Adewole noted some of the benefits of the accredited laboratories to the country to include rendering qualitative services that would have been done in outside the country.

“Before now we do not have laboratories that are up to this level of standard. This is a maiden event in the history of Nigeria.

“Their accreditation implies that we will have a higher level of quality healthcare in terms of laboratory diagnosis.

“The other aspect is that there are some tests that we have to go outside the country, but with this international standard accreditation such tests can be conducted in those three laboratories,’’ he said.
