Miners worry over rising attacks, killings
By Gabriel Ewepu
ABUJA—AFTER the ambush and killing of four workers of a mining company, including a Chinese, last Tuesday, at Alongani village in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, miners, on the platform of Miners Association of Nigeria, MAN, have expressed worry over the rising attacks and killings of its members.
The National President of MAN, Alhaji Shehu Sani, described the attack as unfortunate, adding that the sector demands high security presence to make mining sites safe for operation.
Sani said: “This is very sad. This is an extension of insecurity in the land. Kidnapping and killing are gradually extending to the mining field.
“This is most unfortunate as the economy is collapsing as a result of falling oil prices and rising security challen-ges; government is trying to explore mining as an option and insecurity is showing its ugly face in the mining fields.
“Crime of this magnitude cannot be left without investigation and without proper action taken because this attack is a very bad signal for foreign investors.
“We believe government will not sweep this under the carpet. We want the perpetrators be brought to book.”
