Announcing the news via his official Twitter accaount, Schweinsteiger posted a short video message that was, as per usual, extremely classy.
Thanking the fans, staff and his fellow players at the club, Basti even went on to praise the man who had essentially outcast him from the Manchester United squad this season, stating that he believed Jose Mourinho would bring huge success back to Old Trafford in the near future.
Thanks to all fans, the whole staff and my teammates of @ManUtd! I will never forget my time with the club, but now it’s time for a change! pic.twitter.com/zYn2o5Cjsk
Schweinsteiger, in his farewell message to United fans, has said: “I am sad to leave so many friends at Manchester United. But I am grateful to the club for allowing me the chance to take up the challenge at Chicago Fire.
“I have enjoyed working with the manager, the players and staff here and wish them all the best in the future. But I have to reserve special thanks to the United fans – whose support has been a very special part of my time in Manchester.”
