Forbes 2017 Billionaires: Bill Gates Tops, Dangote Shines As Trump Drops On The World Richest People List
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has once again topped Forbes magazine ‘list of the world’s richest people’, while US President Donald Trump slipped more than 200 spots to 544th, in a year when the number of billionaires rose 13% to 2,043.
As published in the magazine’s annual rich list, Mr Gates, who is the ‘number one richest’ for the fourth year in a row and the richest person in the world for 18 out of the past 23 years, had his fortune risen to $86bn, from $75bn, followed by investor Warren Buffett, up $14.8bn to $75.6bn.
It was not a good year for US President Donald Trump, who slipped 220 spots to 544 and must now rub along on just $3.5bn.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg moved up to number five for the first time, after his fortune rose $11.4 billion in 12 months.
Meanwhile Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico, once the world’s richest man, fell to number six, the first time he’s been out of the top five in a dozen years.
Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote remains Africa’s richest man with $12.2 billion net worth and 103rd in the world, while Mike Adenuga is Africa’s third richest and 250th in the world, with wealth estimated at $6.1 billion.
Femi Otedola is back on the list with networth estimated at $1.8billion, along with Folorunso Alakija, $1.6billion and Abdulsamad Rabiu, the BUA man at $1.1 billion.
The U.S. continues to have more billionaires than any other nation, with a record 565, up from 540 a year ago. China is catching up with 319. (Hong Kong has another 67, and Macau 1.) Germany has the third most with 114 and India, with 101, the first time it has had more than 100, is fourth.

- David Koch (US businessman): $48.3bn
- Michael Bloomberg (Bloomberg founder): $47.5bn
