Lack of electricity: Delta community threatens relocation to Chevron flow station

By Emma Amaize

WARRI—THE people of oil-rich Kokodiagbene community, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South- West Local Government Area,  Delta State, have vowed to relocate from their homes to the Utunana Flow Station, owned by Chevron Nigeria Limited in the area next month, to enjoy electricity with the workers if the company refused to extend electricity to them.

Chairman of the community, Mr Sheriff Mulade, in a statement  confirming the move, however, implored the governor of the state, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, not to take the peaceful disposition of the host community in its demand for electricity from Chevron for granted.

Hundreds of indigenes of Kokodiagbene had on February 1, laid siege to the Utonana flow station, protesting the company’s alleged refusal to supply electricity to the community and threatened to shut down its operations at the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum.

But, on February, 20, the state government invited some leaders of the community to Asaba for a meeting with a view to resolving the issue.

At the meeting chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, government pleaded for time to engage the management of the oil firm on the matter.

Kokodiagbene chairman, Mulade, who spoke to Vanguard, yesterday, said the community was not happy with the handling of the issue by the state government and threatened to resort to self help.
