‘Powerful Nigerians’ frustrating anti-grazing bill – Lawmaker
By Peter Duru
MAKURDI—THE lawmaker representing Gboko/Tarka Federal constituency at the National Assembly, Mr. John Dyegh, yesterday, claimed that some powerful Nigerians were frustrating the passage of the bill prohibiting open grazing pending before the House.
Dyegh, who spoke at the Benue stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, said the same fate had befallen a similar bill sponsored by Senator Barnabas Gemade at the Senate.
The lawmaker accused the Federal Government of placing emphasis on the protection of cow and other livestock rather than human lives, stressing that government must take decisive steps to stem the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
He said: “Recently, government sent out helicopters to survey states where cow are being rustled, but they did not do so in Benue where humans are being killed.
“It clearly shows that we have a government that places more emphasis on animals more than humans. Government must tackle this issue with all seriousness before it gets out of hand.”
