Hampton Preparatory School sets to replicate UK standards

After 20 years of providing excellent care and education in the United Kingdom, where it has a chain of 18 successful schools and a teacher training center, Hampton is debuting in Nigeria in the coming academic session with Hampton Preparatory School, (H P S).

The school, which is located in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, is bringing UK’s standard of learning, teachers training and administration to bear in all its operations, as well as, assuring parents peace of mind with its world-class learning and security facilities, and especially trained personnel in place.

The school facilities include; Fairy Tale Ground, a sand-filled playground, early stage room where the children learn how to read and count, Toddler Room decorated with colourful lights for their densities to enhance their learning experience, among others. There are also baby-sized toilets (water cistern).

Judging from the facilities, the school is well-equipped with the learning of foreign languages and other subjects. The foreign languages such as French, Spanish and Chinese are introduced in a fun way using props, actions and drama.

The children follow the story book adventures of favourites such as ‘Bob le bricoleur’ and the ‘La Chenille qui a tres faim’ using the mediums of music, drama and song.

At ages three and four, with props and games, Mandarin Chinese begins as the children become familiar with the language as it is taught through story-telling, movement and sign language, which are combined with games, stories, music and songs.

Bluebells, HSP’s nursery class, has a corner with Spanish and English labels dotted around. The children playfully practice Spanish words as they are accompanied by the school’s in-house Spanish teacher. The teaching of all three languages is followed throughout from Nursery to Lower, Middle and Upper School when teaching then becomes increasingly formal.

Hampton Preparatory School is co-founded by the duo of Kemi Balogun and Linda Adeyemi Hastrup with Balogun as chief founder.

Balogun has a Bachelors of Education (Hons.) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She bagged Qualified Teachers Status (England and Wales), as well as, Early Years Professional Status (England and Wale). She is also Director at the Alphabet House Group of Nursery Schools and Alpha Training School, UK.

On the other hand, Linda Adeyemi Hastrup studied at the University of Ilorin and graduated in Law (LLB, BL) from the University of Ife. She has Master degree in International Peace and Security. She is also proprietor of KiddieCare Group of Nursery Schools in, UK.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos recently to unveil plans of the institution, the founder of Hampton, Kemi Balogun, stated that the school is established “to create a happy place, an inspirational environment which fosters a passion for learning, creativity, investigation and achievement, where teachers are nurturing and every child is encouraged to excel following our carefully prepared educational programmes based on the British Curriculum.”

The proprietress, said the aim of Hampton is “to build confidence and independence in its children, to empower them both for the next stages of their education and for life beyond the classroom.”

“The very first 5 years of a child’s life is the most important and that is where education foundation is built. If a child misses a proper foundation at that stage, he will suffer the consequences in his life. In England, we are at the cutting edge of learning”, Balogun explained the preference of a preparatory school to secondary education.

Also explaining her rationale for establishing the British standard of education at Hampton in Nigeria, she said, “We learn new things regularly and so such system in England should be brought back to our country so that children developed wholly at preparatory education level.  Once we get that right the sky becomes the child’s limit.”

Speaking on the unique selling points of the school, Hastrup said, “Our experience in England – whole education. We have 22 years of experience in the UK. We also have directors, something, which is lacking in most schools in Nigeria. Hampton leverage on its cutting edge technology to get information as it happens in England. We train our staff using the UK standard.”
