Group berates IPOB over crisis in Oyigbo

PORT HARCOURT – Nigeria Peace Congress, NPC, has condemned the reported violent action of members of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Oyigbo, Rivers state recently that resulted in the death of a Mobile Police officer and destruction of several shops belonging to Hausa traders in the area.

National president of the body, Comrade Temple Morford in a statement weekend urged members of the group to explore peaceful means in driving its convictions, stressing that violent actions were capable of plunging the entire country into crisis.

“Oyigbo incident is capable of causing breakdown of law and order and could spark inter religious crises if allowed unchecked.

Any act of abuse of a right of any citizen of the country is condemnable and unacceptable irrespective of the class , creed or religious divide of the perpetrator, as it contradicts the provisions of the laws of the land”, the group said.

The group further urged the army to observe rules of engagemeng in its encounter with civil populace to avoid tarnishing its image before the international community.

It also appealed to the federal government to be proactive on matters that could spark of crisis to avert a breakdown of law and order.

” We enjoin Nigerians to be part of the peace palliative project championed by the Nigeria Peace Congress, NPC for posterity of our beloved nation “, he said
