Shun rumour mongering, Abia Deputy gov urges

ABA- Abia State deputy governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu has urged residents of the state to shun rumour mongering in order not to cause tension in the society.

Oko Chukwu who made the appeal in an interview with Vanguard in reaction to the wave of false reports which swept through Aba, Thursday morning, claiming that houses were burnt and people murdered by unknown persons in certain parts of the city.

He explained that the reports which were later confirmed to be untrue by security agents caused tension in the state while some people almost relocated their families and called on residents of the state to refrain from giving attention to such unfounded rumours spread by idle minds.

“I urge residents of Abia State to refrain from giving attention to rumours. The fake alarm of Thursday morning where houses were said to have been burnt and people killed almost set the state on fire but the timely intervention of the security agencies who later confirmed the alarm as unfounded. There is no need to cause unnecessary tension and incite people against each other. There is no alternative to peace.

“Residents should be mindful of those who stock is to cause tension in the society. People should always contact the security agencies in the event of suspected movements,” he said.

The deputy governor added that the state governor, Dr.Okezie Ikpeazu is committed to ensuring maintaining peace and harmony in the state and has continue to provide logistics support to the security agencies.

While calling on the soldiers of the Operation Egwu Eke to conform to their rules of conduct, Oko Chukwu enjoined residents of the state not to confront the military but report human right abuses to the authorities.
