Calabar port receives biggest flat bottom vessel

Mrs Olufumilayo Olotu, the  Calabar Port Manager,  has expressed joy over the berthing of the biggest flat bottom vessel, Desert Ranger, at the port.

She said in a statement in Lagos that the vessel, which sailed in directly from Greece, arrived with 62,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

She expressed the appreciation of the port management to its partners, Atlantic Bulk Carriers from Greece, for taking the initiative.

“The berthing of the vessel is a dream come true; it is a sign of good things to come and a sigh of relief for the management of the port.

“Very soon, another carrier vessel will be coming in and we are expecting that Calabar Port will be very active again,’’ she said.

She solicited the support of all stakeholders to ensure that the business environment at the port was conducive to investors.

Mr Asi Esin, the Director-General of Cross River Waterways Authority, was quoted as expressing delight over the development.

Esin assured that the state government would work with the port for maximum benefit to the people.

He said that the issue of tax rebate to willing investors in the port would be looked into to attract more investors to the state.

“Gov. Ben Ayade is desirous of having investors in our state, so I assure you that the governor will do everything possible to ensure that investors do not run away due to multiple taxation,’’ he said.

Esin said that for a long time the state had been hoping and waiting for such an opportunity capable of turning the fortunes of the state for good.

He also assured that the state government would give the port management the desired support to succeed.
