NEMA seeks media support on disaster control, management

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Friday urged the media to help in sensitising Nigerians on disaster control and management.

The North West Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Ishaya Chonoko made the call during a courtesy visit to Kaduna Zonal office of the NAN.

Chonoko said the agency require the active engagement of the media in promoting issues of environmental concerns, ways to avoid disasters and how to manage it.

The coordinator said the agency has about 1, 000 workers expected to cater for 180 million Nigerians, as such it was important to build synergy with the media and other stakeholders to make the work easier.

“Our goal is to ensure free disaster environment through proactive measures in collaboration with media to carry out mass sensitisation to avert and mitigate disaster.

“Information is key. The agency has moved from mere disaster response to managing disaster through disaster information management, information dissemination, and public enlightenment,

“ No organisation can operate and succeed in a vacuum without utilizing the media, hence, NEMA needs to partner the media to ensure its aims and objectives are achieved.

“Promoting disaster management and mitigation is a task that requires all critical stakeholders including the media to pay serious attention to,” Chonoko said.

He expressed appreciation to newsmen for supporting NEMA in its activities, saying that such support had assisted the agency to save lives and property in the zone and across the country.

“The media in Kaduna has always aided NEMA with useful advice, and in heeding to the advises, the agency has saved lives and property,” he stressed.

In his remarks, the Zonal Manager, NAN Kaduna, Maharazu Ahmed, said more attention should be paid in sensitising Nigerians to avoid acts that would trigger disasters and result in loss of lives and property.

He noted that most Nigerians have been displaying nonchalant attitude to issues affecting the environment that trigger flooding and other disasters across the country.

Ahmed pledged that NAN would continue to support NEMA in reducing and managing disasters at all levels across the country.
