…Lie; about 88 children have died— Resident

By Suzan Edeh

Bauchi State Chairman of Primary Health Care Development Agency, PHCDA, Adamu Gamawa, has debunked reports that 80 children in Tiyin ams Shikato communities in Warji Local Government Area were killed by a strange disease, saying there is no case of an epidemic in the communities.

At a briefing yesterday, Gamawa said when the agency received the news of the strange disease, a committee was constituted to investigate.

His words: “It was discovered that there was no trace of a strange disease in Tiyin and Shitako communities of Warji local Government.

“What the committee found was some few cases of malaria fever, which is a normal disease that is treatable.

“When the committee visited the communities, parents were made to bring their children for examination and it was discovered that some of the children had malaria, while others had cough which was mild and treatable.”

Gamawa said the committee found out that two of the three children admitted at a hospital called Gwaram in Tiyin community, died of malaria fever.

Resident recounts deaths

Meanwhile, Gamawa’s comments have sparked protests by residents of the communities.

A farmer and resident of Kankare village in Tiyin community, Abdullahi Rinkichikin, said the residents were angry over the comments made by the Chairman of PHCDA that there was no strange disease in the local government.

He said: “We are telling the world and whoever cares to know what happened in these communities to come and verify things.

“Today makes it three weeks of this epidemic and we still don’t understand the nature of this disease. The hospitals here do not have the right treatment for this strange disease.

“22 children died in Tiyin community and have been buried. In Shikato vilage, 30 children died, in Biza village, five children died; in Allah ya yi village, another five children died, while in Cuba Gaji village, three children died.

“In Bujala village, 10 died; in Kashafa, three; while in Aru village, many more children died.

“10 died in Kashafa village; three children died in Aru village, many more children died there.”

He called on the state government to send a high-powered committee to conduct proper investigation into the case to arrest the situation as many more children stood the risk of losing their lives to the strange disease.
