Insubordination: Buhari summons IGP

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari has met secretly with the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Idris to explain his alleged disobedience to Presidential orders.

The President who is scheduled to visit Damaturu, Yobe state, this morning in apparent effort to sympathize with the people of the state over the abduction of students of Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, met privately with the IGP at the Presidential Villa.

The 110 girls were abducted from their school on February 19, 2018, by men, suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents

At a recent meeting between Nigeria and the United States former Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, both countries agreed to opt for negotiated release of the girls, rather using the military option.

“We are trying to be careful. It is better to get our daughters back alive,” the President had declared.

BusinessDay gathered that the summon of the IGP by the President was fired by huge public outcry over revelations by the President himself that the Inspector General of Police, Idris Abubakar flaunted his orders to remain in Benue until he found solutions to the farmers /grazers crises that claimed several lives, and displaced thousands of Benue indigenes from their farmlands.

A Presidency source told BusinessDay that the meeting between Police IG, Idris was called at the Presidential villa apparently to explain his flouting of the President’s order to remain in Benue at the height of the incidence between farmers and herdsmen.

According to the source, Buhari who is believed to have summoned the IG, received him in a private audience. The IG left about 30 minutes after without speaking to anyone.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media Garba Shehu who later confirmed the meeting, however, refused to disclose details.

“It is believed that in a sort of a query the president demanded for a full report on police operations till date after which he will make further decisions.

There is a renewed resolve to make sure that the killings and bad security situation in Benue State abates.” he said.
Following the development, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to preside over the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC), which the President regularly presides over.

The cabinet meeting formulates and sets roadmaps for execution of government policies and programs and is usually attended by, Minister, top government appointees and some heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government .
