1 Killed In Fresh Lagos Collapsed Building

Exactly 11 days after the Lekki Gardens building collapsed in the state, killing 34 people, another building collapsed at No 9 Alli Street in Mile 12 area of the state killing one woman.

LEADERSHIP Sunday observed that the one storey building which partially collapsed at balcony had before now shown signs of structural defects in other parts of the building yet to cave in.

A witness who lives close to the building who simply gave her name as Esther said,”   I have a friend in the house . any time I go there I discovered the Balcony is always shaking. Anytime you moved towards the veranda the building will just be shaking. My friend said they have been saying they will repair it before it collapsed this morning.”

“You can even see that the house is old it was built over thirty years ago. Another there is that the building is not well maintained.” Speaking about the building that partially collapsed at about 8.45 am on Saturday, the General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) , Mr Michael Akindele confirmed that the building collapsed in the early hours of yesterday.

He said, “Assessment conducted by the agency’s Emergency Response Team showed that the building had shown sign of distress as some portion of the balcony was caving in on its own.

“However full scale investigation as to the actual cause would be carried out by relevant government Agencies. A 47 years old woman sustained bodily injury and died on her way to the hospital, and no other casualty. The occupants of the 16 rooms building have been evacuated and the building condoned off for safety.”

The LASEMA boss charged residents to report cases of buildings likely to collapse and other emergencies in the state to the state government for appropriate action to avert loss of lives and property.

Other agencies that also responded to salvage the situation apart from LASEMA emergency respond team are the Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigerian police Force Alapere Division and the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS)
