Australian Police Arrest Two Over Financial Support For Islamic State

A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were arrested on Tuesday in Sydney on suspicion of raising funds to support the Islamic State.

Catherine Burn, New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner, said the arrest was made by a joint counter-terrorism team in Guildford, a Sydney suburb, in an operation targeting domestic radicals in the country.

“We will be alleging that they were involved in obtaining money to send offshore to assist the Islamic State in its activities.

Burn said if found guilty the maximum sentence for the offence is 25 years imprisonment.

“I previously said that it was disturbing that we continue to deal with teen-aged children in this environment.

“And today’s arrest hasn’t altered that position,” she said.

Meanwhile, Michael Phelan, the Federal Police Deputy Commissioner, said the arrests did not relate to the planning of a terrorist attack in Australia, and there was no imminent threat to the community.

He said the two people apprehended would be charged for raising funds and attempting to transfer those funds to an overseas terrorist organisation.

Phelan said in November that Australia’s anti-money laundering agency said that more than 38 million dollars was suspected of being used to support Islamic militants.

He said the amount was three times more than the year before.

Phelan said available data showed that dozens of Australians are fighting alongside Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. (dpa/NAN)
