Banditry: 20 Feared Killed By Gunmen

Twenty persons were allegedly killed by  heavily armed motorbike bandits who besieged Fanteka community under Maru local government area of Zamfara on Thursday.

Eyewitness Abdu Musa told LEADERSHIP that the gunmen were initially few in number when they launched the first attack, but the community vigilante group engaged them and killed three of them.

He said the gunmen, who carried away the bodies of their men later regrouped  and returned in large number for a reprisal attack.

Musa said that the loss of innocent lives was so much alarming “due to absence of security personnel, and partly due to complete absence of GSM network as a result of the remote nature of the area.”

Another witness said he spotted the gunmen when they surrounded the whole village.

Though the state police command confirmed the incident, it said only six lives were lost from the community while three bandits were also killed during the encounter.

The command spokesman, DSP Amiru  said however that it was a reprisal attack as there has been a lingering conflict between the local volunteer group and the armed bandits, adding that illegal possession of firearms is still illegal.
