Confrontation: Police, Anti-Cult Squad Clash With Suspected Cultists In Onitsha

In a bid to arrest suspected cultists who allegedly killed two of a rival group’s members, in Nkpor, Anambra State on Sunday, a combined team of police in Ogidi and the anti-cult squad in the state,  reportedly chased the suspects to the River-Niger bank in Onitsha after a gun battle.

The suspected cultists believed to be members of the “Aye” confraternity, had in the wee hours of on Saturday killed a member of  a rival cult group in his residence at Uzoegwu Street, Nkpor and  dumped the corpse at the crown hospital in Nkpor.

On a tip-off, the Ogidi divisional police officer (DPO), Hassan Musa  led a team to the hospital and later to the house of the deceased,  where he said, axes, charms, machetes and clubs were recovered.

It was gathered that in a bid to arrest the suspects, the security operatives stormed the cultists’ hideout. The suspects on sighting them fled to the River-Niger bank.

Meanwhile, in nearby Asaba, a 32 year old woman identified as Ishioma Okwuelum in Umutu, Ukwani  local government area of Delta State on Thursday allegedly bathed her  sister with hot water for asking her for food to eat.

Reports said the victim identified as Ashinedu Okuelum, suspected to having mental challenges had requested for a plate of meal from the sister who angrily poured hot water on her, leaving her  with first degree burns.

But police officers at the Umutu Police Station who did not want they  names in the print confirmed that the victim was suspected to be  mentally unstable.

They also said she sustained a ‘high degree of injuries,’ adding that the suspect was arrested and charged to court on Friday

Sources said the victim of the unfortunate incident reportedly took ill after her graduation from the state owned University Abraka sometime in 2015.

It was learnt that several efforts to get her treated and cured by the family members proved abortive, instead her case had worsened over the months.
