Crisis as Ali Modu Sheriff plans ‘coup’ against PDP

– Sheriff has refused to set up a committee that would determine the zoning formula to be adopted by the party

– He is suspected of plotting to prolong his stay in office or predetermine the works of the committees, especially the one on zoning

– PDP members are beginning to query why Sheriff would want to remain in office

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be deteriorating following plans by the embattled national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, to either remain in office or make sure that the office of the national chairman is zoned to the north-east in order to enable him to retain the seat.

Ali Modu Sheriff appears to be making moves to consolidate power by visiting power brokers in the party to ensure that he remains in office.

Sheriff, whose emergence as party chairman was met with stiff opposition from several party members, was directed by the party’s national executive committee (NEC) to set up a committee that would determine the zoning formula to be adopted by the party as it prepares for its national convention slated for May 21 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

His tenure and that of the national working committee members was originally billed to end at the end of this month but has been extended till May 21 by the NEC in order to allow the former governor of Borno state to organise the national convention, which will herald the arrival of new national officers.

Several PDP members, particularly the forum of former ministers, who served under the PDP-led federal government from 1999 to 2015 had rejected the ex-governor, saying he did not have the character of someone who could lead the party.

However, the intervention of the PDP governors’ forum, led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo state, doused the tension as Sheriff was asked to leave office in May.

But rather than preparing to vacate office in May as earlier agreed, The Punch reports that Sheriff appears to be making moves to consolidate power by visiting power brokers in the party to ensure that he remains in office.

Sheriff was said to have visited Governor Mimiko of Ondo state and Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state who he hopes will assist him to hold on to power.

Some PDP members are beginning to query why Sheriff would want to remain in office and refuse to abide by the agreement that brought him to power.

One of the governors of the party from the southern part of the country who spoke  to The Punch on condition of anonymity on Monday, March 22 said: “Sheriff spoke with us when he visited Rivers State to campaign for the rerun. He was in Ondo and Ekiti states as well to speak with the governors.

“I just hope that we are able to manage this issue well, because I see the BoT members telling us that they warned us against accepting him.”

Likewise, Senator Walid Jibrin, the acting chairman of the BoT wondered why the PDP national chairman had defied the directive of the NEC to set up the committees.

He said: “The committees, especially the zoning committee, have yet to be named. I don’t know what is delaying it. You can ask the chairman of the party.”

In another development, at least seven governors are said to be on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) radar over an alleged $200 billion in loot in the United Arab Emirates.

This follows a trip to Dubai by the chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, and other officials of the anti-graft agency, in an attempt to recover the $200 billion in loot.

Mallam Shehu Sani, the chairman of the Senate committee on foreign and domestic debts, had claimed that as much as $200 billion of stolen funds from Nigeria may have been hidden in the UAE by past public officers and their agents or fronts.
