Gov Al-Makura To Commence N500m Rural Roads Construction

Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa state has disclosed that the state government has earmarked N500m for the construction and rehabilitation of rural roads and bridges in the state.

Almakura stated this yesterday in Fadama Bauna, after inspecting the deplorable state of rural roads in Lafia east development area, noting that although the amount earmarked is grossly inadequate,  the government would review its financial commitment to meet its set target.

Almakura, who maintained that rural emancipation has been the centerpiece of his administration’s focus, added: “One thing we find very disturbing that has caused so much hardship to the people of rural communities is the issue of culverts and bridges that cut them off from from other communities during the rainy season.”

He said areas that are most vulnerable and have the worst challenges are those in the Lafia east and Lafia north development areas.

He explained that so far about 33 bridges and box culverts have been identified in the southern senatorial zone alone with 13 on the Ashige, Alawagana, Gidan Buba, Fadama Bauna Abulagu roads visited by the governor.

Almakura also disclosed that government has engaged the services of Triacta Nig. Ltd who have the capacity and sophistication to complete the work before the rains peaked and have been given two months to complete the projects.

Similarly,  the governor fired a warning shot to those encroaching on forest reserved areas in Akurba and land earmarked for airstrip in Angwan Rere, all in Lafia, to vacate the land.

In the same vein the commissioner for lands and survey, Mr. Sunny Agassi and the general manager of urban development board, Mr. Adamu Sule were given marching orders to reclaim the lands.

“All those people who encroached on those lands should vacate them as soon as possible because government would take physical possession of the land in no distant future.”

“So is it in their own interest that they do not erect structures because they will eventually be pulled down and government property taken over for projects that in the interest of the generality of the people of the state” he maintained.
