The killing of three soldiers, including a major and an official of the Department of state security service between March 17 and March 18 by gunmen in two communities in Rivers State have sparked reaction among the residents.

Leadership reports that there appears to be disagreement between Abonnema community in Akuku-Toru local government area and Bille community in Degema local government area of the state.

It was gathered that the disagreement has to do with the particular place the soldiers were killed on on March 17.

The people of Abonnema are claiming that the soldiers were not killed in their community but were ambushed and killed along the creeks near Bille community, while the people of Bille insisted that the gruesome act occurred in their terrain.

Commenting on the issue, an environmental right activist and indigene of Abonnema, Annkio Briggs, said: “The soldiers were not killed in Abonnema town. What ever happened, happened in the creeks. However we condemn the killing of the military men at this time.”

But, the chairman, community development committee (CDC), Bille community, Asatubo Igbamibo Kemuel, in his reaction said: “From what we gathered, the soldiers were chased from the Abonnema axis of the Sombreiro River into the Bille territory. Whereas we call on the authority of the Nigerian Army to carry out proper investigation of the incident, and bring the perpetrators to justice, we do advice the general public to be cautious in making unconfirmed statements about Bille.”

Reacting also to the incident, Governor Nyesom Wike, described the soldiers’ death as “unfortunate” noting that it had nothing to do with the state’s and national parliamentary election held on Saturday, March 19.

On March 17 no fewer than three soldiers, including a major were killed by gunmen in along the creeks off Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku-Toru local government area of the state, while a DSS official was killined in an ambush by hoodlums in Egi community in Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni local government area of the state.

In a statement issued by Captain Eli Lazarus, the deputy director, army public relations, 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt, said the two soldiers were killed while another two were injured when they were ambushed by suspected sea pirates off the Abonnema at about 11.00am.

Lazarus in less than 24 hours also released another statement on the death of another security operative by gunmen at Egi community, in the unstable Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement issued by its publicity secretary, Chris Finebone, disagreed with the governor and accused him and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being responsible for the incident.

“Governor Wike said the killings in Rivers State were amongst cult groups. Now, were the Major of the Nigerian Army and the other soldiers killed cult members? Wike and his evil deeds will soon be exposed,” he said.

In a swift reaction, the state government and the ruling PDP also accused the APC of being responsible for the incident, alleging that the party unleashed its cultists to execute the evil act in order to turn the military against the people of the state.
