Labour decries destruction of PHCN property

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Monday decried the destruction of Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s (PHCN) property by a top government official (name withheld).

The union in a letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, said it was wrong for such a senior officer to break doors and abuse PHCN staff.

The letter signed by NUEE General Secretary, Mr Joe Ajaero, in Lagos said it was sad that such an official had brought his highly-placed office to ridicule.

“The officer went to the PHCN office on March 18 and started breaking doors to offices to forcefully take over the premises.

“The officer, who is supposed to be a custodian of our commonwealth is alleged to have removed the button of his cloth to fight with workers calling them names,’’ the statement said.

The statement urged the official to repair the property and apologise to the workers and leaders for addressing them as hooligans and `nincompoops.’

It urged stakeholders in the privatisation of PHCN to address contending issues before it would be liquidated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that there have been unresolved issues since PHCN was privatised and handed over to Generation and Distribution companies as private investors.

Some of the issues raised included incomplete payment of severance package to over 3,000 staff and non-release of 10 per cent equity shareholding to staff.

Others are non-payment of 16 months pension and gratuity and allowances such as housing, medical, leave and others.
