LG Chair Tasks FG, NASS On Autonomy Of Judiciary

The chairman of Dekina local government area of Kogi State, Mohammed Ali has urged the federal government and the National Assembly to ensure that the judiciary at the states’ level is accorded full autonomy.

Ali made the call at Federal Prisons, Dekina when the state’s chief judge, Justice Nasir Ajanah paid a visit to the facility as part of his prison decongestion tour.

The council chairman said granting full autonomy to the judiciary arm of government would enhance the observance of the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government.

He held that vibrancy in legislation, unquestionable court judgments, orders and effective execution of policies could only be guaranteed when the three arms have their full autonomy and are able to act as checks and balances against each other.

Ali also called on the Ministry of Interior to ensure that prison inmates across the country were adequately sheltered in good and well secured environment, where they could be reformed.

He decried the high rate of kidnapping in the state, noting that Kogi was leading in kidnapping cases in the country and urged security agencies to improve on their crime prevention and detection strategies.

The council boss thanked the chief judge for coming to the rescue of the people, especially the inmates who breathed air of freedom through his intervention.

Ali promised to donate 50 mattresses to ameliorate the bedding problems of the inmates and also pledged to provide the prison formation with a vehicle to assist in conveying the inmates to and from courts.
