A 22-year-old man, Ayomide John, who allegedly waylaid a man and dispossessed him of his belongings valued at N100,000, was on Friday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

John, of no fixed address, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and theft brought against him.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale, told the court that the accused and 11 of his friends now at large committed the offences on March 12, at about 11:30pm, at Small Kuramo, Lagos.

He said that they attacked the complainant, Mr Thomas Yakubu, and stole his valuables.

Osijiale said that the accused and others stole a HTC phone, a wrist watch and wallet containing a Zenith Bank ATM card and N5, 000, all valued at N100,000.

He said that Yakubu, who was on his way back from work, was waylaid by the accused but was rescued by a passerby who raised alarm.

“The accused was arrested while others absconded,” he said.

Osijiale said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs Memunat Folami, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Folami adjourned the case till April 6 for trial. (NAN)
