Norway Stops Deportation Of Asylum Seekers To Russia

Norway says it will not deport any more asylum seekers to Russia, noting that Russian authorities are contradicting the European Convention on Human Rights and immediately returning Syrians to their country of origin.

The Norwegian immigration authorities said on Monday that in the future, it would only deport Syrians to Russia if they have a direct connection to the country.

“The Norwegian authorities are to reassess around 1,000 asylum applications,’’ the authority said.

In November, the Norwegian parliament decided to return refugees with a Russian residence permit to Russia without processing their asylum applications.

Immigration Minister Sylvie Listhaug had repeatedly described the country as “safe.’’ (dpa/NAN)
