Pharmacists Unveil Mentoring Programme For New Members

pharmacists unveil mentoring program

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy (NAPharm), have unveiled the young pharmacists mentoring programme to mentor 10,000 young pharmacists.

The chairman of the Mentoring Committee, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, at the launching of the programme in Lagos, said the programme  would enhance the future of pharmacy profession by grooming future leaders and improving the standard of pharmacy practice and image of the profession.

According to Agbaje, the body has identified gaps affecting professional development of young pharmacists with their attendant negative effects on the image and progress of pharmacy in Nigeria.

Agbaje said the programme is to drive and push the young pharmacists to pursue their dreams and to get the necessary help when the going gets tough, saying, “This is a programme that will be on ground and will be on for a long time to help the younger ones in the profession, to encourage them to continue when they feel like turning back.”

However, Agbaje noted that the sector is under appreciated as Pharmacists are very highly educated people but the environment has not allowed the society to benefit from their education and training.

“To bring about change within a diverse profession such as pharmacy, one needs a critical mass pull in the same direction; one needs general agreement about the best direction in which to move and defining and agreeing on this direction has been the greatest challenge,” he said.

Unveiling the mentoring website, the executive vice chairman, Leadership Group Limited, Mr. Lere Baale said the project is good news to the young pharmacists and the profession at large.

He noted that the project would address the key challenges of best practices and leadership in pharmacy.

Also, the chairman, NAPharm, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi said a profession that does not take care of its younger generation does not have a future, adding that the future of a country can be determined by the worth of its youths.

“This project is geared at mentoring young pharmacists by establishing a rewarding relationship with accomplished senior colleagues through the provision of wisdom, technical knowledge, assistance, supports, empathy and reciprocated respect throughout and often.”

The president, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Mr. Ahmed Yakasai advised the new graduates to use the mentoring website for improving on their knowledge.

He stated, “With the launch of the mentoring website, this will help in empowering the young pharmacists. There will soon be a workshop to hear the view of these young ones and then proffer solution to their problems.”
