ProjectRead4Life Organises Competition To Encourage Reading Culture

NGOs on reading

ProjectRead4Life, a reading club aimed to encourage reading culture in students have organised quiz competition for students of the Local Education Authority(LEA) Primary School, Mpape, Abuja.

The project coordinator,  Anthony Adio stated that the project was set up to improve reading culture amongst children and youths in Nigeria adding that the books read are books written by Nigerians. He stated that the club has been established in 10 schools in FCT while adding that there were plans to expand and introduce the clubs in other schools in FCT and outside the territory.

He said, “We want to expand. We want to go to other states. We do not receive a dime from the schools. We need vehicles and other things to ease our movement. We are calling on anyone who could assist us in nurturing our young ones, to do so.”

“At the moment, we have about 10 schools we are covering in Abuja. The schools comprise both private and public schools. We read our novels every term. Every term, we get a minimum of one book. At the end of the term, we organise a test. We chose the best performing student based on the test. We select the best performing student from each school and we organise a contest for them to pick the best overall prize winner.

“We look for people to buy the books for the students. In government schools the novels are given free to the students but in private schools, they are mandated to buy the books. We usually are face with the challenge of getting the books for the students in government school because they are usually many. We do write to cooperate organisations and sometimes but they are not forth coming,” he said.
