Rejection Of Equality Bill, An Assault On Women’s Rights – WELA

Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA) has described the recent rejection of the Gender and Equal Opportunities bill by the Nigerian Senate as an assault on the collective rights of Nigerian women.

WELA, which stated this in a press statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by the chairperson of the group, Mrs. Funmi Falana, also stated that the Senators who voted against the bill are are living in the past.

While commending the sponsors of the bill, the civil society group urged them not to be disappointed as the struggle for gender equality continues.

“Those who voted the bill down claimed that the bill is inconsistent with the Nigerian Constitution and the major religions in Nigeria.

“This bill sought to protect Nigerian women from violence and provide them with equal marital rights as their male counterparts including the rights of widows to inheritance.

“It also emphasizes that women should have the right to fully participate in political activities including the right to vote and be eligible for public offices without restriction and marginalization.

“However, the sponsors of the bill should not be frustrated as Section 42 of the Constitution has prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex. In line with the provision of the Constitution several statutes and customs which discriminate against gender equality have been struck down by our courts in several decided cases.”

The statement added that “The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights which has been domesticated by the National Assembly has equally outlawed gender inequality.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 18 of the African Charter has recognized all international conventions and treaties which protect the rights of women and children. Accordingly, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was upheld recently in a case.”
