Dakuku Peterside says electorates had the right to cast their vote without being intimidated

Peterside, who is the present director general, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), on March 18 told the state’s residents to make sure they exercise their franchise in Saturday national and state legislative rerun elections.

Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, Peterside told the electorate not to be intimidated by anybody or group from voting in the rerun elections, noting that the era of intimidating the people to manipulate the electoral system was over.

“The Federal Government has assured of adequate security during the re-run elections on Saturday. Nobody should feel intimidated and I urge the people to go out and vote for their candidates. There is nothing to fear because security agencies are there to protect you,” he said.

The NIMASA boss said residents were still scared of the experience of the election, saying: “ Our people were intimidated and scared to come out to vote last year; that fear is still there, but we urge them that there is nothing to fear. That era is gone; government has provided security for the election.”

Peterside stressed that every electorate had the right to cast his vote without being intimidated.

He condemned the killing of two soldiers by sea pirates along Abonnema creek on Thursday, saying it is barbaric because the soldiers were executing their legitimate duties.

Meanwhile, the two major political parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC have been blaming each other for the killings of two soldiers in the state.

The state government in a statement issued by the commissioner for information, Austin Tam-George accused APC agents of killing the soldiers and called for an international enquiry into the unfortunate incident.

Peterside also blamed the killing on what he alleged as the provocative statements made by Governor Nyesom Wike and members of the PDP.
