The Federal Government was at the weekend commended for its pragmatic foreign policy that led to the formation of the ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which restored peace in Liberia.

Former President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and now member of the House of Representatives, Sani Zorro, made the commendation in Abuja at the public presentation of the book ‘‘The ECOMOG Story.”

The presentation, which took place at the Nigeria National Merit Awards House in Maitama district of the Federal Capital Territory, witnessed an assemblage of both serving and retired military top brass, diplomats and private individuals including members of the media who played various roles in the operations of the multi-national force in Liberia.

The book, authored by former Press Secretary of Ex-ECOMOC Field Commanders, Lt. Gen. John Shagaya and Lt. Gen. John Mark Inienger, is a graphic compendium of the events, both historical and contemporary, that led to the six years fratricidal war in Liberia including the genocide and bloodbath that took place as well as the role of ECOMOG in bringing the crises to an end.

Chaired by Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defense, Hon. Betara Aliyu, the event hosted personalities like Lt. Gen. (rtd), Joshua Dogonyaro, Lt. Gen. (rtd), Arnold Quainoo, Majors Gen. (rtd) I. Bakut, Adetunji Olurin, John Shagaya and Timothy Shelpidi, all of who were awarded the Honour of Grand Commander of International Peace.

Major highlight of the event was the presentation of the book and awards of Grand Commander of International Peace to former ECOMOG Field Commanders and Grand Master of International Peace to former Field officers, Diplomats and members of the media.

In his remarks at the occasion, Betara Aliyu, who was represented by his deputy, Solomon Ahwinahwi, promised that the National Assembly would henceforth handle all issues relating to the military with utmost dispatch.
