Anambra Poll: APC ponders pruning of candidates

POLITICAL parties  preparing for the  November 18  governorship election in Anambra State are beginning to feel the impact of the incumbency as wielded by Governor Willie Obiano of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

Besides controlling the state-owned electronic media outfit, which comes handy in terms of publicizing achievements of the governor, all the political appointees of the governor seem very determined to ensure that Obiano retains his seat after the election.

It is apparently for this reason that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is considering seriously of prevailing on some of the governorship aspirants to withdraw to enable the party deal with a manageable figure. There are 14 aspirants already and indications are that more would join the race before the primaries to select a candidate.

An insider in the party told Vanguard that appealing to some of the aspirants to step down for those considered very credible and who have the wherewithal to prosecute the governorship race is one challenge facing the Senator Jim Nwobodo committee appointed by APC to deliver Anambra State to the party in November.

In all the meetings so far held by APC stakeholders in the zone, it was gathered that their main challenge was usually how to ask some people to withdraw from the governorship race before the primaries so as to avoid rancor during and after the exercise.

According to information gathered in Awka, one of the things being considered is to direct aspirants from Anambra Central to withdraw and support their colleagues from Anambra North and Anambra South who, too, must decide among them those to face the primaries.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige is one person who understands the difficult task ahead for the party and he has told APC members in clear terms that their greatest undoing would be to underrate the incumbent governor, Chief Willie Obiano in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Ngige said in Awka: “APC will be meeting an incumbent governor and as such, the task of removing him from office may not be easy. Anambra governorship election will not be a tea party because we will be facing an incumbent governor that is strong in propaganda and very chauvinistic too. So we must work hard not to factionalize ourselves.”
