Lagos MWAN urges FG to embrace research in health policy

By Sola Ogundipe

THE Medical Women Association of Nigeria, MWAN, Lagos State branch, has urged the Federal government to appreciate the value of research in policy making especially in the area of health.

Disclosing this during a chat with Good Health Weekly, on the Association’s 40th anniversary, an executive member of MWAN Lagos, Dr Funmi Ajose said government is yet to adopt the required attitude about medical research towards improving the life and welfare of Nigerian women.

Ajose, who is Consultant Dermatologist, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, said majority of research in the country done by individuals, end up on the shelves afterwards.

“We all know that research in this country is relegated.  The government is yet to appreciate the value of research in policy making especially concerning health. Majority of research in this country is done by individuals. Consequently this research ends up in the shelves after the researchers have earned their promotion.

“The government should now translate the research into practical terms. There is a lot of research going on and MWAN participates in a lot of them. We have a lot of research information in this country but because most of the research are individual efforts and as soon as you get what you want you put the research on the shelves.”

Ajose implored  government to take the translatory aspect of research and put into practice. We don’t understand and appreciate the value of research in their policies.

According to her, for instance, Nigeria has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the world.

“Yet we have not tried to find out what our girls know about childbirth. Nobody is looking at the girl child education as to one of the important means of reducing maternal mortality because of maternal mortality occurs in the first time mothers and who knows when the girl will be a first time mothers.

“So the education should start when the girls are in schools. If we understand that as a research importance and organise/sponsor that kind of research it will be used as part of the National Strategy of prevention of maternal mortality.

“We have tried to implore the government to understand the importance of using research materials for national development that is yet to materialise.”

Ajose  said the government should engage the Medical Women to assist  in translating the research materials into practice.

Activities lined up for the 40th anniversary include free screening programmes, and a scientific conference at the Lagos Sheraton Hotels and Towers and the Medical Research Centre in LASUTH on November 23-24, 2017.

Focus will be on current trends in health and preventive care in the health sector with the theme: “Women Health and Empowerment’ tools for sustainable development in the Health Sector”.

Sub-themes will address current health issues such as anaemia in pregnancy, mental health, immunisation, food security, etc.
