PCN deploys inspectors to curb quakery in pharmacy

By Oluwaseyi Adeshina

IN its bid to rid the country of quackery and unwholesome practices, and to establish standards in all areas of pharmacy practice, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, has  deployed eight teams of seasoned inspectors to five  geopolitical zones.

Disclosing the move to Good Health Weekly in Abuja, the Public Relations Officer of the PCN,  Pharm Peter Iliya Ndirpaya, said the move would ensure  provision of quality pharmaceutical services as well as safe, affordable and efficacious medicines for Nigerians.

“In the South East, hospitals in Ebonyi and Enugu States are being inspected. In the South West the inspectors are visiting Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States while Kano and Jigawa are the major stops in the North West. In the North Central, the team is visiting Plateau, Benue, Kogi and Kwara states.

“In the areas visited, we have carried out complete audit of the personnel, processes and infrastructure available in the pharmacy departments of each of the hospitals including their capacity for training of intern pharmacists,” he said.

He noted that defaulters have been identified and  reprimanded as appropriate even though the idea is to ensure full maintenance of the standard of practice in hospital pharmacies.

Further, Ndirpaya  explained that “sometimes sanctions, which come in form of blacklist, down grade of accreditation or outright closure of premises in extreme cases are applied, as the case may be”.

He also advised all accredited hospital pharmacies to renew their annual hospital pharmacy licenses as well as their internship accreditation status.
