Cristiano Ronaldo dicusses Lionel Messi after Ballon d’Or 2017 win

Cristiano Ronaldo says he hopes his battle with Lionel Messi continues after winning the 2017 Ballon d’Or.

The Real Madrid forward was named as the winner of the prestigious award at a ceremony at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He finished ahead of great rival Messi to draw level with the Barcelona forward on five Ballon d’Or victories.

After collecting the award, Ronaldo spoke of his joy at yet another individual gong.

‘I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,’ he said.

This year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League. ‘Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.’

Ronaldo and Messi have shared the award over the last decade, with Kaka back in 2007 the last player to win it before the duo dominated it. Some predict that their status as the best two players in the world is coming to an end, with Ronaldo now 32-years-old.

However, the Portuguese star hopes their rivalry can go on.

‘I hope to play at this level for a few more years, I hope the battle with Messi continues, things happen for a reason. ‘I feel good this season and we’ll see what we win at the end of the year. ‘Neymar has a lot of talent, a lot of potential, and I’m sure he’ll have some chance to win in the future.’

Ronaldo was also asked about his future, to which he said he wanted to stay with Real Madrid for the rest of his career. ‘I’m happy in Real Madrid so I want to stay there if possible. ‘If it’s possible [until the end of my career].’
